Our goal, is to provide an opportunity for family historians to access information in the pursuit of their family research and to have an opportunity to purchase copies of items that support the information used in the telling of one's family history.
KARA is a genealogy, not-for-profit organization, located in Peterborough, Ontario. We specialize in family history related and local area historical information for this region which includes the counties of Peterborough, Haliburton and Northumberland and the City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County). The KARA Research Centre Library houses a growing collection of resources for family history research.
The KARA Web Store is a major step forward as we bring the broader world wide web community the opportunity to access and purchase new and second hand books relevant to researching family history in our local region. Our web store also brings the opportunity to purchase copies of informational items selected from the holdings of the KARA Library.
Everything costs money -rent, heat, hydro, insurance and even Web Stores. At KARA, we just want you to know that into our 10th year of operation, KARA has always operated on the strength of its volunteer efforts. There are over 65 different roles that consume more than 7000 hours of time annually, all provided through a dedicated team of volunteer workers.

Security
At KARA, we want you to enjoy your shopping experience in our On Line Store. We have focused on bringing you a selection of local area books, as well as offering a cross section of materials scanned, photographed and/or extracted from the holdings of our Research Centre Library.
To provide a secure environment in which you can shop, we have elected to use a shopping cart program with a payment system set up through Pay Pal. We believe this will provide the safety and security needed for your shopping enjoyment. Pay Pal provides you with various payment options over the Internet.
Canadian Currency: We are a Canadian based organization and so have naturally opted to have our prices shown in Canadian currency.
Slip into Gear and Lets Drive This Cart:
Shopping On Line is not all that much different than shopping in the physical environment of regular stores. Whether you are in the physical store or shopping On Line, what you decide to purchase is placed in your shopping cart. You can purchase On Line by simply clicking "Add to Cart" and that item will automatically be added to your shopping cart list.
View What's in My Cart
Any time you wish to review what items are already in the shopping cart, just click "View Cart" and its contents will be revealed.
If It's in the Cart Do I Have to Buy It?
No. Always remember that just like shopping in physical stores, you are not obligated to buy an item if you select it then change your mind. Just remove the item from you cart by clicking on:
a) Delete Item - this removes the single item from your cart
b) Clear Cart -this empties all items from your cart
Minimum Order Amount
While many individual items in the KARA On Line store are priced under $10.00, the minimum total order amount must reach $10.00 for the shopping cart to complete the checkout step of purchasing during your shopping visit.
How to Finalize an Order
Simply click Checkout and follow through the steps shown to complete and pay for your purchases.
Shipping Options -[Find out more about how this part of the program works. Are there different shipping options -e.g. within Canada; to the US, and shipping world wide?]
Satisfaction
Helping you succeed in your family history research matters to us. We have carefully selected items available through our Web Store. Each entry provides you with up to 4 names of individuals involved in a given record, the year the event took place and a general location by Province, Country or, within Ontario, by County. We believe this level of detail provides enough information to determine if a particular item is a match to an individual in your family tree.
Since we cannot refund e-mail received goods, please be sure you wish to complete the purchase before finalizing and paying for a transaction. All e-mail purchases are final.
Of course, if you purchase a book from us and upon receiving it, find it is not what you want, then return it to us within 10 days, in the same good condition as it was when first sent out. A Refund will be issued after the returned item is received to the KARA office on High St., in Peterborough and provided that the item was returned in accordance with the rest of this policy on returning purchases.
What's In the Store
Books - Books are included under two categories, New and Used. Under additional subheadings within the New book section, will be found such KARA published works as family histories, indexes, cemetery transcripts, and newspaper b/m/d extracts. A note in regard to book covers as shown in the Web Store. In many cases, book covers are shown with coloured photos and backgrounds so that the thumbnail images can be better viewed on line. Covers of KARA publications are printed in black and white on coloured card stock.
Headstone Photos: The KARA digital collection of cemetery headstones numbers in excess of 50,000 images. We are just beginning to look at how copies of these many fine photos can be made available through our Web Store.
Newspaper Items: Newspaper materials will be found in two formats:
a) Extracts -mainly covering births, marriages and deaths; these items represent information that has been read and typed from the original newspaper entry. The sub categories of births, marriages and deaths are available to search each area individually.
b) Scans -these items can be everything from soup to nuts, such as an ad for a company, a list of students first quarter grades, a weekly social notes column and so on. Scans are copies of the original item as it appeared in a local or non-local newspaper.
Parish Records: These items can represent a birth or baptism date, a marriage record or burial notation made in a parish register. This category is divided into baptisms, marriages and burials, each of which can be searched individually.
Availability
1. All purchases are paid for on line. When you select and pay for items, the shopping cart inventory adjusts itself to show the item as removed from stock. We cannot guarantee an item will still be available if you try to send payment by cheque to our Peterborough office. Please follow the on line steps for completing your purchases.
2. Some items are available as downloadable files. First make your purchases and checkout as usual. Once your payment is cleared, an automatic email message will be sent to you. That message will include your pass code, valid for a limited time, that will enable you to access and download a copy of the document(s) you have purchased. Click on the pass code link, in the email, to access and download your copy of the document purchased.
3. Some items are not and will not be available as down-loadable files. Books are one good example. When you buy book titles from KARA, we will receive notification of your purchases from the Shopping Cart program and Pay Pal. Once your payment is marked as cleared by Pay Pal, then your books will be shipped as soon as possible. We aim to send parcels out within 10 days of receiving notification of payment received and approved. Please remember, we will be as disappointed as you if a mix up occurs. You want your order, and we want you to receive it.
4. Some items are not yet available as downloadable E-Commerce files, but they will be in the course of time. If you purchase a copy of a document that is not at present an E-Commerce file, but might be in the future, we will either directly E-mail your copy or upload the file and send you a pass code for you to access your document.
